We have been saved to serve.
As a child of God, you are part of a blessed lineage: “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12) And being a part of this spiritual family means that we are free from the chains of sin. We have received God-given freedom to move and serve his people in order that His holy name be glorified.
Warning: Freedom does not equal an easy, carefree life. Service that glorifies God might not look like a typical “church” project. Consider Abraham. God asked him to take his only son, Isaac, and offer him up as a burnt sacrifice. Can you imagine? Abraham obeyed, taking Isaac to Mount Moriah, in accordance to God’s command. Amazing is the fact that Mount Moriah is where Jesus, God’s only son, was sacrificed for the sins of the world. Just before Abraham took his knife to complete the task, the angel of the Lord stopped him. God said, “I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore.” (Genesis 22:17)
Years later, a famine came to the land and God commanded Isaac to stay where he was and be blessed. Isaac planted a crop and reaped a hundredfold, “because the Lord blessed him.” He soon became rich and then very wealthy. The Philistines grew jealous of Isaac’s prosperity and forced him to move. God came to Isaac and told him not to fear. He appeared to him in his time of need. Both Abraham and Isaac were obedient to the service that God had called them to. Both were saved to serve.
God saves us to take away our fears so that we may further His kingdom by our newfound freedom. What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. (Psalm 8:4-5) You might not feel like a king, but by God’s grace it’s not how you feel but how He feels about you! In His word, your heavenly Father has told you how he defines your true worth. “So God created man in his own image.”(Genesis 1:27) Talk about seeing something awesome the next time you look in the mirror!
You are a child of God, not a failure. You are the Creator’s reflection, not a picture of despair. You are royalty in the eyes of the Father, not an unnoticed, unappreciated servant. Simply put, you are priceless and that is truth that empowers you to serve Him!
The psalmist said, “O Lord, truly I am your servant–you have freed me from my chains.” (116:16). And, “I will walk about in freedom for I have sought out your precepts.” (119:45) When we follow our selfish desires, we are bound to the emptiness that follows in the wake of accumulating material things. We enslave ourselves to false promises and fools gold. We serve ourselves and remain chained to our selfishness. But, when we serve the Lord in the way He asks us to serve Him, we are free to live life the way God meant for us to live it: to love Him and to love each other!
Feel the freedom that has been given to you from Heaven. Go through this day renewed by your Creator’s mighty power. Without fear, let Him be your light and eagerly look for ways to shine and serve!
