Our third treasure piece is labeled HEALING. We smile and think about our Savior as the Great Healer. In Matthew’s gospel alone, there are nine recorded times when Jesus healed people. And within those accounts, we are told that Jesus healed many more people who followed him. When this life brings sickness and pain, Jesus heals.
The prophet Isaiah said of Jesus: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.” (53:4) In the New Testament, we read many accounts of Jesus healing people. We are told that He went throughout Galilee “healing every disease and sickness among the people.” Word spread and soon people from all over the region brought “all who were ill” and Jesus healed them all. (Matt. 4:23-25)
In the eighth chapter of Matthew, we find four separate accounts of Jesus healing people. A man with leprosy came and knelt down before the Lord, and with amazing faith, said that Jesus could heal his condition. The man added, “If you are willing.” Jesus replied, “I am willing.” The man was healed. Next we learn of a Roman centurion whose servant was suffering. The soldier went to Jesus and presented the situation. Jesus said that He would go and heal the servant. The soldier tells Jesus that he isn’t worthy and that he knows all Jesus has to do is say the word and the servant would be healed. Jesus applauds the man’s faith and we learn that the servant was healed “at that very hour.” (Matt. 8:5-13)
I believe the most important aspect of the Lord’s healing power in our lives, is found in the ninth chapter of Matthew’s gospel. Take time to let this part of Scripture resonate with the deepest part of your soul. It is a beautiful truth that will set us free, especially when the times of pain and suffering draw near. Jesus was in Capernaum, and some men brought Him a paralytic to heal. Jesus saw the faith of the men and said to the paralytic, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” He healed the man’s spiritual affliction first and then healed his physical pain!
By God’s grace, I experienced the healing touch of the Lord. I worked alongside a man named Larry who loved Jesus very much. At the time, Larry was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and one in every hundred people had a tumor like Larry’s. “God is gracious,” my friend said. “If I’m that lucky one, ninety-nine other souls still have time to begin a relationship with the Lord.”
Larry and I had worked in the same school for three years and shared nothing more than a greeting. The next year, we co-taught in the same classroom. One day he told me about a beautiful work of art, painted with brilliant colors; a splendor-soaked masterpiece called Salvation. The Healer’s masterpiece. I soon realized that I was one of the ninety-nine souls that was seeing this eternal art for the first time. Funny how the Healer orchestrates things. Three months before Larry passed away, I surrendered my life to the Lord and was able to tell Larry the good news.
Dear Friend, if you’ve been saved, praise His mighty name and rejoice! If you’re still sitting in life’s waiting room, wondering how long it will take to get real answers, Jesus invites you in to his love so that your heart wounds may be healed forever.
