Mercy Rain

You’re all alone in a wide open field under a sky filled with heavy gray clouds. A gentle breeze slowly turns into a light wind and the air feels crisp and cool against your skin. You close your eyes and wait for the water to fall. When it does, a single drop hits your arm and you hear a soft voice whisper, “Let me fall into the hands of the LORD, for his mercy is very great.” A second drop lands on your face, and you sense the same voice will speak to you. And it does: “Remember me for this also, my God, and show mercy to me according to your great love.”

This must be a dream, but it isn’t. It’s real because God has indeed been listening. He has answers. All of them. Just then, a third drop hits the back of your hand: “The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer.” You walked a long way to get here and even misplaced your faith several times along the journey, but when the next drop touches down on your shoulder, you know something miraculous is happening. For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings. You hear the voice speak in reassuring tones.

And then the hard rain comes, in sheets and the words come quickly: Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.

Beyond understanding, the downpour has filled your soul with the Father’s voice. His words comfort your heart. You open your eyes and are amazed to see the field is filled with people who love you. You aren’t alone. You were never alone. You are alive and loved. You are wrapped secure in the Lord’s hands because of heaven’s mercy rain.
